Located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a country with rich and diversified mineral source materials which are the potential resources for the country.

Recently, Vietnam has completed geological mapping and mineral search on the entire territory at 1/500,000 and 1/200,000 ratios in land area, 41% map in ratio 1/50,000 has been completed. In addition, the investigation, exploration, and mining tin, gold and titaniumin the continental shelf as well as offshore have been conducted.

Eventhough the resources are diverse and abundance, nearly 90% of mineral ores are small size, located in unfavorable area with unstable quality (usually mint or low quality), some ores are difficult to  exploit. The solid minerals in Vietnam are various in types with scattered distribution throughout the country. However, they are concentrated in northern and central regions.

The distribution of some major minerals : iron (Fe) is mainly in the North and North Central; manganese (Mn) in Cao Bang; lead- zinc (Pb-Zn)  in Cho Don - Cho Dien (Bac Kan), Ha Giang; copper (Cu)  in Lao Cai, Gold (Au) in  Quang Nam; bauxite (Al) in Dak Nong and Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Binh Phuoc; Titanium (Ti)  in the Central Coast and Thai Nguyen; rare soil, barite and fluorite in Lai Chau; limestone cement in Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Quang Binh; white limestone, precious stones in Yen Bai and Nghe An ...

The Circular N0. 08/2008/TT-BCT of the Ministry of Industry and Trade dated June 182008 has shown the conditions and standards for mineral exports. Accordingly, from 2009 onwards, mineral exports must meet certain standards and could not be mined from the regions which are instate’s plan for domestic processing.
