Energy & Resources / Electricity

The electricity industry has been among the key economic industries of Vietnam in recent years. The commercial electricity growth rate averaged 14.25%/year in the 2002-2010 period. Average national electricity demand is forecast to increase by 14% to 16% annually in the 2011-2015 period and over 11.5% in the 2016-2020 period. Electricity demand is expected to be 194-211 billion kWh in 2015, 329-362 billion kWh in 2020 and 695-834 billion kWh in 2030.

Coal thermal power, oil, gas and hydropower are the main electricity supply sources in Vietnam, accounting for 94% of the total production capacity. Hydropower itself currently accounts for 38% of total production.

According to the electricity industry’s development master plan, by 2020 the proportion of hydropower supply will fall while that of nuclear electricity and renewable electricity from environmentally friendly sources will increase. In this period the country’s first two nuclear electricity generators will commence operation, boosting national production capacity.

On 1 July 2011, a trial competitive electricity supply market officially commenced. The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) expects that between 2012 and 2014 the official competitive market for electricity generation will be launched . This has vital implications for the Electricity industry, putting pressure on existing power plants to improve production effectiveness. It is also a good sign for investors wishing to take part in developing electricity supply projects.
