MDEC 2013 expected to attract more investment in Mekong Delta (23/9/2013)

-When: Nov 21 to 24

-Where: Vinh Long province

Thoi Bao Kinh Te - The 2013 Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MDEC Vinh Long 2013) will take place in Vinh Long province from Nov 21 to 24, expecting to help attract more investment in Mekong Delta.

This will be a chance for the region to introduce its advantages and potential to call for more investment and create a development momentum for the region, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, who is head of the Southwestern Region Steering Committee (SRSC) said at a press conference in HCM City Sept 16.

He said he expects that through the forum, investors, ministries and sectors will find measures to continue promoting economic development and social welfare in the region, contributing to bettering the living conditions for locals.

The forum includes a series of events such as the 2013 Conference on Investment Promotion and Social Welfare for the Mekong Delta region and the 2013 Mekong Delta Business Forum.

By the end of Aug, 13 Mekong Delta localities attracted 139 projects with total pledged capital of $21.24 billion. Some experts believe the Mekong Delta is not an attractive destination due to its weak infrastructure.

Commercial banks and businesses have committed to providing nearly VND600 billion ($28.46 million) to the Mekong Delta under social welfare programs for the region
