Introduction
   

General information

 

- Geographic location: Quang Binh is bounded by Ha Tinh province to the North, by Laos to the West, by Quang Tri province to the South and by South China Sea to the East.

 

- Area: 8,065.3 km2.

 

- Topographic features: The province has complicated topography with mountains, forests lying next to the sea forming slope down from the West to the East. Small, narrow plains account for 15% of the total natural area mainly situated in the banks of the main rivers. 85% of the total land is hills, mountains, limestone, etc.

 

- Administrative units: The province is divided into 1 city (Dong Hoi city) and 6 districts: Quang Trach, Bo Trach, Quang Ninh, Le Thuy, Tuyen Hoa and Minh Hoa.

 

- Population: 854,900 (Statistics Yearbook of 2007)

 

Resources

 

- Natural resources: Quang Binh has many materials for construction material industries such as limestones in Xuan Son, clay for making cement, clay for making pottery & porcelain, granite,  grindstone in Bo Trach, Tuyen Hoa, Minh Hoa, kaolin in Loc Ninh – Dong Hoi, white sand for making glass in Thach Anh, etc.


- Tourism resources:
There are many places of interest in the province such as Phong Nha (one of the most beautiful and largest caverns in Vietnam), and Tien Son cavern, Phong Nha-Ke Bang primeval forest conservation zone (one the 5 World’s heritage of Vietnam), Nhat Le beach, Da Nhay, Bang hot stream, etc.


- Human resources:
The province’s workforce is abundant with 425,171 labourers, accounting for 52,51 of its population, in which agricultural labourers account for 66.18%; industrial labourers account for 10.4%. There were 4,676 college degree holders, 6,042 university (and above) degree holders. Trained labourers are nearly 33,000 accounting for 8% of the workforce.

Infrastructures

 

- Transportation system: It is quite convenient to travel in/from/to Quang Binh with North-South railway route, national highway No. 1A and Ho Chi Minh route running through most of the province’s residence areas and areas which are potential for development. National highway No. 12A connects its Cha Lo – Na Phau international border gate with Middle Laos and Northern East of Thailand. Besides, the province has 116km of coastal line. Nhat Le and Gianh ports allow the circulation of 5,000 ton ships. Hon La deep water bay which can be developed into port allowing the circulation of 30,000-50,000 ton ships . Dong Hoi airport helps to support economic, tourism development.  


- Power supply system:
Up to the year 2005, all communes of the province have been supplied with electricity by the national network or others, meeting the demand for socio-economic development of the province, especially for new investment projects.


- Industrial zones:
The province has two industrial zones: Hon La IZ with the area of 55.8 hectares in Quang Dong, Quang Trach district, Dong Hoi Northern West IZ situated 3km from Dong Hoi city to the North. 

Development plan up to the year 2010

 

- GDP growth rate: It is planned to reach the rate of 11%-12%, in which agriculture will account for 20%; Industry-construction will account for 40% and services will account for 40%.


- Sectors’ development plan:

    + Agriculture-Fishery: Breeding: this will be developed with centred intensive farming and diversified domestic animals. Fishery: this will be developed to create raw materials for processing, ensuring food safety; attention will be paid to brackish, coastal as well as fresh water aquaculture, etc.

+ Industry: it is planned to reach the annual rate of 20-21% for the period 2006-2010 with focus on developing construction material production, agriculture-forestry-fishery product processing, engineering, etc., high-tech and less polluted industries, etc

Priorities will be given to:

1. Production of all kinds of cement, high quality pottery & pocerlain, glass, micro-organic fertilizers, fire-brick, glass brick, etc.

2. Agriculture-forestry-fishery product processing: rubber, pine attar, tapioca power, wooden, bamboo & neohouzeaua products, seafood processing, maize, peanut, sesame, chilly, vegetable oil, medicine, etc.

3. Production and assembly of automobile, electronics, high-tech industries, textile, footwear, etc.

4. Investment in construction of parks, sport centers (golf, stadium, volleyball, badminton, tennis, etc), hotel, supermarkets, trade centers in new urban areas and other new areas.

5. Investment in construction of beach tourism centers, eco-tourism, convalesce tours, tours along Ho Chi Minh route, other service units, hotels, restaurants in Dong Hoi city, Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park, border gate economic zone, etc.

6. Investment in construction of infrastructure of industrial zone, border gate economic zone and others, etc.

7. Handicrafts for tourism and export
