Geographic location: Ha Tinh is bounded by Nghe An Provice to the North, by Quang Binh Province to the South, by South China Sea to the East and by Laos to the West;
Area: 6,019 km2;
Topographic features: narrow and steep with the West – East inclination (average slope: 1.2%); There are high mountains in the West (average height: 1,500m), adjoined by bowl shaped hills, small, narrow deltaic land (average height: 500m) and then the beach sand-bank;
Administrative units: There are two towns: Ha Tinh and Hong Linh; 9 districts: Nghi Xuan, Duc Tho, Huong Son, Huong Khe, Vu Quang, Can Loc, Thach Ha, Cam Xuyen, Ky An
Population: 1,289,058 (Year 2005)
Resources
- Natural Resources: Ha Tinh has a 137 km long coastal line; fish reserves are 80,000 – 90,000 tons/year; others’ reserves (shrimp, cuttlefish, etc) are 7,000 – 8,000 tons/ year; but the exploration rate is merely 20% to 30%. There are 605,574 hectares of natural land including agricultural land of 103,720 hectares, accounting for 17.13%; forestry land of 231,100 hectares; Flora in Ha Tinh is diversified and plentiful with more than 86 species and more than 500 types of timbers. Valuable ones include ironwood, bassia, teakwood, Fokienia hodginsii, etc. Rare and valuable fauna are elephant, leopard, tiger, black gibbon, the Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis)
- Tourism resources: Ha Tinh is a miniature of the Central area in particular and of Vietnam in general; It leans against Truong Son mountain chain and overlooks the South China Sea. It has lots of beautiful landscapes, historic monuments and many beaches which have potentiality to become valuable places of interest. Famous tourist spots are Thien Cam, Xuan Thanh, Thach Hai, Deo Con, etc.
- Human resources: The province has a young population with high percentage of women of reproductive age (23,6%). There is an additional number of 35,200 young persons joining the working force of the Province in 2005 compared to that of 2000, the number will possibly reach 68,100 in 2010.
Infrastructure
- Transportation system: Roadway and railway are the major means of transportation; There are 3 national highway routes running through the Province: Highways No. 8, 15 and 1A. The railway lines in Ha Tinh province is 70 km long (running through Duc Tho, Vu Quang and Huong Khe) with many stations for passengers and for goods, which are convenient for goods exchange with neighbouring areas. However, it still lacks built roads linking from these stations to the economic centres, which reduces the good impact of railway on economic development.
- Post and telecommunication system: Currently, there are 294 post offices including 11 level II post offices (district post offices), 50 level III post offices (village post offices), 227 post office- commune cultural centers, 6 kiosks. There are 86 BTS stations, in which 22 belongs to Vinaphone, 19 to Mobiphone, 6 to EVN- Telecom, 29 to Viettel, 10 to S-phone covering all districts/towns; all communes have telephones; 43 switchboards with 223,340 lines; 160,487 of which are in use.
Economic situation
- Growth rate: Over the past years, Ha Tinh has achieved continuous and stable economic growth rate with the average GDP of 7.06% in the period from Year 1996 to 2000, of 8,8 % in the period from 2001-2005.
Development plan up to the Year 2010
- The GDP is planned to reach 12%; in which Industry – Construction account for 35%; Trade – Service account for 37%, agricultural, forestry and fishery account for 28%.
