General information
- Geographic location: Hung Yen is bounded by Bac Ninh province and Hanoi to the North and Northern West, by Hai Duong province to the East, by Thai Binh province to the South and by Ha Tay and Ha Nam provinces to the West and Southern West.
- Area: 923,5 km2.
- Topographic features: Topographic features of Hung Yen are quite flat without hills and mountains, lower from the North to the South and from the West to the East.
- Administrative units: Hung Yen is divided into 1 town (Hung Yen town) and 9 districts: Van Lam, My Hao, Yen My, Van Giang, Khoai Chau, Kim Dong, An Thi, Tien Lu and Phu Cu.
- Population: 1,156,500 (Statistical Yearbook of 2007).
Resources
- Natural resources: The majority of land is agricultural land, especially for growing paddy and short-term industrial crops. The agricultural land area was 62,602.89 hectares accounting for 67.82% of the province’s total natural area according to statistics of land done in 2003. The major kind of mineral is black sand with high reserves mainly found along Red river and Luoc river. This can be exploited to meet the construction demand of the province and neighbouring areas. Besides, there is also clay for making bricks, tiles, etc.
- Tourism resources: The province has many famous cultural and historical monuments (over 900 ones including 132 national ranking together with thousands of valuable ancient objects and documents such as Hien street, Da Hoa – Da Trach, reed ground (Bai Say), Hai Thuong Lan Ong monument, Phu Ung Temple.
- Human resources: The number of young labour was 57,000 accounting for 51% of the total population (1,116,000). Trained labourers (university, college degree holders, school graduates and technical workers) accounted for 25%. They are well-trained, hard working and creative.
- Transportation system: It is convenient to travel in/to/from Hung Yen with 23 km of national highway No. 5A, 24km of railway connecting Hung Yen with Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. National highway No. 39A connecting National highways No.5A and 10 runs through Hung Yen, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh to join in National highway No. 1; another way running to National highway no.1 is through Yen Lech bridge to Ha Nam meeting National highway no.1 in Dong Van station.
Apart from National highways, there are rural roads including provincial, district, inter-commune roads, 60% of which are covered with tar. Hung Yen has 72 km of waterway in Red river and Luoc river good for heavy goods transportation and goods from the sea and goods from Quang Ninh to Hanoi. The province is situated near Noi Bai, Gia Lam and Cat Bi airports and large seaports of Cai Lan and Hai Phong.
- Industrial zones: Hung Yen has Noi A Street industrial zone with the area of 390 hectares (390ha), Noi B Street industrial zone with the area of 150 hectares, Industrial zone in Hung Yen town with the area of 150 hectares, Minh Duc industrial zone with the area of 200 hectares, Nhu Quynh A industrial zone with the area of 50 hectares, Nhu Quynh B industrial zone with the area of 45 hectares.

- Growth rate: After 10 years of the re-organization of the province (1997-2007), the average rate was 12.4%; 13.7% in first 6 months of 2007.

Development plan up to the year 2010
- GDP growth rate : It is planned to reach the rate of 10-11%
- Sectors’ development plan:
+ Services: It is planned to develop services with high advantages and added values such as transportation, post-telecommunication, finance, credit, insurance, tourism, hotels, entertainment, etc; to link tourism development to cultural and historical monuments such as Hien street, Da Hoa-Da Trach, Tong Tran-Cuc Hoa, Phu Ung Temple, Hai Thuong Lan Ong monument, etc.
+ Agriculture: It is planned to continue economic transmission with the establishment of high technology agricultural production units, development of specialized and intensive farming, production of high quality goods; increase in area of high quality paddy to 45%, area of winter crops to 40% and increase in the area of cultivation land, area of flower, decorative plants, fruit trees and medical plants; promotion of breeding, safe, intensive and anti-disease aquaculture. It is planned to have the structure with 24% of food crops, 31% of vegetables, fruits and industrial crops, 45% of breeding.
+ Industry: It is planned to continue the economic transmission based on sector, products and economic sectors with attention paid to key industries such as electronics, engineering, metallurgy, automobile, textile, processing, etc; applying new technology, reducing production costs, raising the value of products by producing refined products with high value and market competitiveness.
Further planning and construction of new industrial zones with at least one industrial zone in each district with the suitable scale will be implemented soon.
