General information
- Geographic location: Ha Tay is bounded by Vinh Phuc province to the North, by Ha Nam to the South, by Hanoi and Hung Yen province to the East, by Hoa Binh and Phu Tho province to the West.
- Area: 2,198 km2.
- Topographic features: The province has features of both mountain and plain.
- Administrative units: The province is divided into 1 city (Ha Dong city), 1 town (Son Tay town) and 12 districts: Ba Vi, Chuong My, Dan Phuong, Hoai Duc, My Duc, Phu Xuyen, Phuc Tho, Quoc Oai, Thach That, Thanh Oai, Thuong Tin and Ung Hoa.
- Population: 2,561,200 (Statistical Yearbook of 2007).
Resources
- Natural resources: The province’s soil has high fertility suitable for many short-term and long term plants, food and industrial crops, pastures, fruit trees, timbers. The province does not have large area of forestry but its natural forest (Ba Vi forest) has many various and precious plants. The province is not rich in mineral. Its major mineral are limestone in My Duc, Chuong My, granite in Chuong My and mineral water in Ba Vi.
- Tourism resources: The province has great potentiality for developing tourism with many places of interest such Thay mountain in Quoc Oai, Tan Vien Son mountain in Ba Vi related to Son Tinh – Thuy Tinh legend, Huong Son mountain in My Duc (known as the most beautiful mountain of Vietnam), Dong Mo – Ngai Son – Hai stream. All of these form 3 uninterrupted tourism centers: Son Tay – Ba Vi, Huong Son, Ha Dong and surrounding.
- Human resources: The province’s technical employees directly working in production account for 25.77% whereas university, college degree holders and school graduates account for 59.96%. These show the fact that the province lack of skillful workers but redundant in university, college degree holders and school graduates who are currently jobless.
Infrastructures
- Transportation system: the system is quite developed with over 400km of waterway, 43km of railway, nearly 3,000 km of roadway (connected to all communes of the province). Roadway include key national highways (1A, No. 6, 11A, 21, 32, 70, 71, 73, etc). There is North-South railway route running through the province. The waterway includes Red, Da and Day rivers.
- Power supply system: The power network has connected to almost all communes (98.3%), 95% of rural households have been supplied with electricity by 695 transformer stations of nearly 180,000 KVA. Over 260 million KWh is consumed everyday by households and production (120 KWh/person on average)
- Water supply and drainage system: The province has basic irrigational system, which is able to solve the problems of drought, flood in the locality (water level kept below 300 mm). It has 5 large irrigational systems, over 300 pumping stations with 1,600 pumps and a dense system of canals and manmade rivers.
- Industrial zones: The province has 5 industrial zones: Northern Phu Cat IZ with the total area of 304 hectares in Thach Hoa commune, Thach That district, Phu Nghia IZ with the total area of 150 hectares in Phu My district, Thach That – Quoc Oai IZ with the total area of 155 hectares in Quoc Oai district, Phung Hiep IZ with the total area of 170 hectares in Thuong Tin district, Northern Thuong Tin IZ with the total area of 470 hectares in Duyen Thai commune, Thuong Tin district.
Development plan up to the year 2010
- GDP growth rate: It is planned to reach the rate of 13-14%
- Sectors’ development plan:
+ Agriculture-Forestry-Fishery: Agriculture: it is planned to develop with attention paid to food safety. Its objectives are to make changes in structure of plants, domestic animals; increase agricultural product output value to 33 million VND; decrease the income from growing (62.1% to 50%) and increase the income from breeding (38% to 50%); increase the number of pigs for lean meat to 1.5 million pigs, to increase the number of fowls to 15 million, increase the number of milk cows to 2,720 and 20,000 in 2010. To obtain these plans, the province has implemented programs such as development of commodity paddy growing area (to 60,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 70% of the total area), program of agricultural expansion encouragement (increase growing pigs for lean meat, milk cow, etc.).
+ Industry: It is developed with focus on 5 key industries such as food, agricultural products, drinks; construction materials, fertilizers, chemicals, metallic engineering, electricity generation; textile, footwear, traditional handicrafts.
