Introduction
   

General information

 

- Geographic location: Lang Son is bounded by Cao Bang province to the North, by Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces to the West and South – West, by Bac Giang province to the South, by China to the North-East and by Quang Ninh province to the South-East.

 

- Area: 8,331.2 km2

 

- Topographic features: The popular kind of terrain in Lang Son is low mountains and hills covering over 80% of the province’s total area. The average altitude is 252m above sea level level.

 

- Administrative unit: Lang Son is divided into Lang Son city and 10 districts: Trang Dinh, Van Lang, Van Quang, Binh Gia, Bac Son, Huu Lung, Chi Lang, Cao Loc, Loc Binh and Dinh Lap.

 

- Population: 746,400 (Year 2006- General Office of Statistics).

 

Resources

 

- Natural resources: The province’s total natural land area is 830,521 hectares with three main types of land: feralit, humus feralit, peat which are suitable for many kinds of annual agricultural plants, industrial trees, timbers. Mineral resources are not much in Lang Son, mine reserves are limited but various in types such as brown coal in Na Duong, peat in Binh Gia, phosphorus in Huu Lung, boxit in Van Lang, Cao Loc, gold in Tan Van, Van Mic (Binh Gia district)

 

- Tourism resources: Lang Son has many places of interest such as Ky Lua market street, Stone statue of Lady To Thi, Tam Thanh pagoda, Nhi Thanh cave, Ky Cung river’s stone wharf, Mau Son tourist place, Wind grotto, etc. The borderline markets are also great attractions to visitors.


- Human resources:
In 2002, Lang Son’s population is 742,214 and the people of working age are 394,600 (accounting for 53%), in which 82% is working in agricultural sector. The number of trained labour is low (18%).  

Infrustration

 

- Transportation system: transportation is quite easy with many national highways running through the province such as national highways No. 1A, 4B, 31, 279, 2 railway routes: Lang Son – China route (100km long in Lang Son) and Lang Son – Na Duong route. This is a great stimuli for Lang Son’s  economic development.


- Power supply system:
National power network extends to 85.4% of its communes/wards/townlets; Commodity of electricity products achieves 82.5 million KW per hour in 2000.
 

- Water supply and drainage system: Lang Son Water Supply and Drainage Company mainly supplies water from underground water system with the capacity of 11,000 cubic meters per day. It satisfies 85% of the urban people’s need. Some towns and villages use clean water supply system of the National Program for Clean Water and Environmental Sanitation.


- Postal system:  
The system is quite developed. In Lang Son city, it is able to communicate with 220 countries in the world. Mobile phones can be reached in Lang Son city, border gate areas and several districts.


- Industrial zone:
Lang Son has 3 industrial zones: Hong Phong Industrial zone with the area of 100 hectare in Cao Loc district, Dong Banh with the area of 200 hectares in Chi Lang district and Na Duong Industrial zone in Loc Binh district.
  

Development plan up to the year 2010

 

- GDP growth rate: It is planned to reach the rate of 14-15% yearly with the increase of 20-12% in construction-industry, 3.5-4% in agriculture

 

- Sectors’ development plan:

            + Services: It is planned to reach the rate of 13-14.5% yearly with more development in infrastructure, commercial centers, goods transit warehouses, trade-service & hotel clusters, places of interest, conservation of traditional festivals.

 

            + Agriculture-Forestry-Fishery : It is planned to reach the average growth rate of 3.5–4% yearly. These sectors will be developed with intensive farming, modern technology application to raise productivity, output; further development of short-term industrial plants such as tobacco, Soya bean, sugarcane, ginger, etc. and of fruit trees well grown in the province’s land and climate to reach the total fruit trees area of over 31,000 hectares in 2010.

 

            + Industry: It is planned to reach the rate of 19-20% yearly with focus on agricultural – forestry product processing, foodstuff, refinery of products for export, engineering assembly, encouragement and favorable conditions given to the development of small and medium sized industrial zones.
